Having the right certifications and skills is extremely important for any job seeker, especially for those with international credentials. Whether you're looking to explore a new career path, enhance your qualifications, or compete for higher-paying roles, investing in yourself is one of the best career moves you can make.

Why does certification matter?

Certifications demonstrate to employers that you meet industry standards and have the necessary skills. They also serve as proof of your expertise and can bridge gaps where international degrees may not be recognized.

Key benefits include:

  • Validation of expertise: Certifications provide a standardized way to reinforce your knowledge.

  • Enhanced credibility: Employers may prioritize candidates with relevant certifications, especially in competitive fields.

  • Industry recognition: Certain certifications are universally respected, adding significant value to your job applications making you a more attractive candidate.

  • Higher earning potential: Certified professionals often earn higher salaries than their non-certified peers. Another strong incentive to invest in your skills and certifications.

Popular Certifications That Can Boost Employability:

Depending on your industry, there are some certifications worth pursuing. You should browse the internet to find the most in-demand certifications for your industry and, even better, reach out to well-established professionals in your industry and field. Request an informational interview, and you will gain insight into the proper certification for you. I've gotten you started with some certifications below:

  • Technology: CompTIA, Google IT Support Professional Certificate, AWS Certification, Cisco (CCNA, CCNP)

  • Healthcare: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Coding Certification (CPC), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)

  • Finance & Business: CPA, CFA, Six Sigma, PMP (Project Management Professional)

  • Human Resources: SHRM-CP, PHR

  • Marketing & Communications: Google Analytics, HubSpot Content Marketing, Facebook Blueprint

Preliminary Assignment:

I am a strong advocate of adopting a strategic and focused approach in all that we do. Before even reaching out to people to find out what would be the ideal certifications for you, I recommend doing the following:

  • Self-reflection: Reflect on the roles and jobs that interest you?

  • Certifications and skills in high demand: Review at least 3-5 job postings on different job boards to identify the certifications and skills most needed. Carefully check out the “preferred” and “required” qualifications.

  • Training platforms: Once you know the certifications and skills in high demand, you can now research the affordable platforms. Coursera or Udemy are good examples.

Certifications Debrief:

Let's have a more in-depth conversation about certifications. How would you start the process and navigate some roadblocks? Some of the roadblocks you may potentially face include cost, time constraints, and unfamiliarity with the certification landscape. But rest assured that there are ways to overcome these challenges. Check out below:

  • Leverage free and affordable resources: Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning offer courses at a very reasonable price.

  • Join professional networks: Engage with industry-specific communities to stay updated on trends and opportunities. I suggested informational interviews. During those interviews, ask about reputable professional networks you can join. You can also find options, such as professional groups, on Facebook and other social media platforms.

  • Gain hands-on experience: Volunteering, internships, and freelancing can strengthen your credentials. Additionally, consider exploring temporary or contract jobs through staffing agencies. That can also help you gain the experience you need. I also recently discovered that at the state and local levels, various professional and training opportunities are available. Check out your state or locality; you may find something interesting.

Beyond Certifications: Soft Skills Matter Too

While technical certifications are invaluable, employers also seek strong soft skills. These skills, such as communication, leadership, problem-solving, and networking, are often what set successful professionals apart in the workplace. Focusing on enhancing these skills, in addition to obtaining technical certifications, will make you a well-rounded and attractive candidate. I’ve listed a few skills below, but there are certainly more. In addition to the learning platforms listed above, you can also explore CareerOneStop.

  • Communication and workplace culture adaptation

  • Leadership and teamwork

  • Problem-solving and adaptability

  • Networking and professional presence

Some final advice for you:

  • Embrace the training and certification process as an opportunity for growth, rather than another task. immerse yourself in learning so that your certification empowers you to confidently share your knowledge. Remember, it’s all about the impact you can create.

  • Don't forget to proudly showcase your certification on your resume. Remember, that's what would make you stand out.

Taking the Next Step

Investing in certifications and continuous learning isn't just about landing a job. It's about building a sustainable and thriving career in the U.S. By being proactive and strategic, you can enhance your employability, stand out in a competitive market, and achieve long-term career success.
